Onyx the BH Caique thinks she is a sonic screwdriver!

When I first met Onyx, she was paired with a WB caique she had been raised with. Unfortunately the WB caique had a stroke and died. The owner decided she needed to rehome her birds a few months later and knowin that Onyx had bonded with me offered her to me.

So yeah, Onyx is single caique now. She's about 9 years old--- it would be nice if she had a buddy still, but she seems happy with just me, and I don't know how she would get along with a new bird. Also caiques around here cost ridiculous amounts of money (900-1200$$!!)

Ahh, how sad. :c It's good to know that she is doing alright and happy despite that! Parrots who've bonded sometimes suffer from great grief after the passing of their companion. As long as she gets plenty of human attention, I'm sure she'll be fine. ( Although I would keep an eye out for any feather plucking, just to be safe! Many people I know in the parrot forums swear they haven't met a singly kept caique who doesn't begin plucking. I am confident that there are some who are happy to be kept singly, but plucking is such a serious issue that it's better to be a bit paranoid and catch it early on, i m o. ) — and yeah, caiques are expensive. I know one breeder who sells them for a reasonable amount, but they are the only person I've heard of who sells younglings for under $900. It seems like a lot, for a medium sized parrot.

Yikes! I hope she does okay--- she looks a bit ragged in the video because she is right in the middle of her moult AND not used to the diaper yet--- I'm trying to think--- I'm surprised she never had any issues--- her owner kept her, her buddy, and a goffin boarded at the bird store for well over a year, and that's when I made friends with Onyx (the WB was a nippy little snot though lol). One day I found the WB despondent, but still alive--- tried to save her but she didn't make it ;n; owner decided to finally take her birds back home about 2 weeks later, Onyx escaped her cage and got her toe bit really bad by a gray durin that time, went back to her home for about 2 months before her owner decided to rehome, and then was at the store for another month or two before I finally brought her home! So it's been a crazy past 20 months or so for her.

Hopefully she stays happy-- I'm holding out that I won't have any issues! My rescue U2 started plucking at the store before we took him home and he has grown back in with no issues :3
