I bought 3 hens from a friend of mine...one blues splash Maran, once black cooper Maran and another unidentified breed. I got then in late July and she said they were around 18 weeks old. We expected eggs in September...my unidentified hen (who is sweet as pie) began laying in mid November. She's fairly small too...my black copper is a big fat girl and and hasn't even began to show signs that ashes ready to lay. She has a bright red comb and waddles but she isn't nesting and won't squat. My blue splash has been slow to mature and just recently got a nice sized comb. It's getting redder, but still has more pink than red. I wasn't impressed with my friend's hens living condition- they lived in a cramped stall of a barn with no natural light and a single bulb for artificial light. Could this have stunted their process of maturing? I'm getting a little frustrated! They are about 9months old!

They may not be laying because of the decreased daylight this time of year. A hen needs ~14 hours of daylight to stimulate her to lay, and this time of year we get way less than that. I'm getting no eggs at all at the moment from 20 hens, some of whom hatched early last February.

I started a flock in July as well. A Barred Rock and An Americana was told they'd lay in about 8 wks. They just started laying this past week every other day. Have 3 RIRs that I'm not sure of age that I've yet to get an egg since July. Their combs are starting to brighten, so I hold hope of soon. I've added a light to the roosting area that comes on at 3am that doubles as "daylight" and heat.

I've got one that contributes to lay quite well...I considered adding a light to the coop, but the hassle of running electrical down there is a deterrent. I'm not desperate, just frustrated. do you think that they have matured slowly due to their early living conditions?

My first 3 were very slow. 2 of them began to lay eggs around 6 months and the third was around 10 months. They were born in April. 2 of them went broody this summer and barely laid any eggs. I got them 6 eggs to hatch and all 6 hatched in August they are about 5 months old and have just started to lay. Of course not in the layer boxes but in the Alpacas alfalfa.

I honestly don't know. This is my first flock. I've read and asked questions, seems everyone has different opinions. My hens are far from fancy housed, kinda ghetto. Transformed a rabbit hutch for the roosting area and an insulated dog house for the nesting area. Have a brother in-law whose flock live at the Hilton compared to mine and he's gotten absolutely nothing! I've come to the conclusion, chickens are very temperamental and they'll lay when they feel like it. Also learned if I was trying to make a living at it, I'd starve. Good luck. :)

all but one of the 6 are laying! my first 3 are all finally laying! I really suspect that their nutrition and conditions for their first 3-4 months ( before I got them) was detrimental. 2 if them only started laying a week or 2 ago, at 11 months old. 2 of my 3 EE are laying, they were born the last week in August. we new get 2-5 eggs daily.

My first 3 girls started laying at 5-6 months they are now about 22 months. My next set of 3 girls started laying at about 5 months. They are now 6 months. I'm currently getting 3-6 eggs a day. The snow really freaked them out but even in the freezing weather they continue to lay. I feed my 6 girls and 1 roo scratch and peck naturally free. They love it! They love it even more when it gets to all the crumbs and I mix in a big scoop of warm bacon grease.
