Yes I am a newbie!

I did build the coop and run way before I got the babies, which was just last week.

Side note:
Where I have my horses there are chickens....I feed, play, talk to... give them treats,,steal their eggs...clean their coop....all the regular chicken stuff I have been doing for about a year. I decided it was time for me to get my own.

My original plan...which has changed many times in the last year was to get older pullet and not mess with babies at all, but I just couldn't help myself. Now I was planning on ordering exactly what I wanted, breed wise (sometime very soon), but I just HAD TO GO AND DO IT when I was at the feed store last week...I saw all these cute little babies and decided we should start off right with babies so we could get to know them and they could get to know us.

I've read a lot but I still have to clue what I am doing. I don't mind learning along the way. So far this week so good!

practice chickens ! LOL Thats the best. let you know how bad you want them after taking care of someone elses. This is the first time I bought meat chickens and it will be the last .

About 9 months ago I met this sweet granny at the grocery store. Long story short she turned out to be a crazy chicken lady. She was getting rid of some chickens about six months ago and asked me if I wanted to take a few.....she meant dead ones. Let's just say after I skinned the first I gave up. BUT I did at least skin one all by myself.

I just want eggs.

I agree , starting with babies. you can tame them easier . Can you do pictures ? Would like to see your coop and babies

crap i didn't mean to put the texas flag pic.
but that is part of my coop. the very beginning of it.

aww, they are very cute ! did you paint the flag ? Its a great job . I like it. I see your giving them corn and greens have you also gave them chick grit ?

no that is actually not corn, it's marigold petals ( <<i know i don't need to give them this BUT), fresh home grown oregano, some clovers and other greens and egg shells in a little dirt "container" that i dug up from the run area. I've been adding garlic and apple cider vinegar with the mother to the water since I got them but will stop after today. I read somewhere I should do that for 5 days straight when I get them??? I haven't killed them yet and they seem to have calmed down a lot and seems like they know my voice so I think everything will end up ok.
That is if they turn out to be girls.

yes i did paint it. i did have a little help with setting up the main coop but I basically did it all myself.
my husband kept getting mad cuz i was constantly making changes so i fired him from the job!

I do give my "other chickens" (the ones at my horses--the ones that aren't really mine) grit and oyster shells but so far these babies have just had dirt and sand that have a few small pebbles in it.....showed I be buying grit already? I figured they were too small for the girl and the dirt and sand were ok for now.

One meatie ready for the freezer. going at a whopping 7lbs. 3.4 oz.   It was way to hard to pluck and I dont want to do it again. next one will be skinned. my hands are very tired.

Konner was raring to go with his rubber gloves. I should of took a picture. He was standing close when I sliced its neck off and he had a hold of the feet.  For some reason he didnt let go and the main artery in the neck was squirting. He was covered in blood from head to toe. every where except his gloves that is  !   I laughed tears.  The look on his face.. :lau
:gig

little ones!

I have no idea!!! LOL

I'm thinking some California whites, Barred rocks and Welsummers

So your just getting started in chickens ?  :celebrate
kiki if you're like the rest of US you'll need a bigger coop. It don't matter how big it is now. I promise it won't be big enough. I have five now. The last one I made it so I could just build on to it when needed. Notice I said , when needed and not ,if needed lol.
