Are their vaccines you give to your newly born kids?

If so, what are you giving them?

I have raised a couple Pygmy Goats with no vaccines....burst we now have a new Kid, about 3-weeks old now, and wonder if we should give her vaccines?

Thank you.

My goats get the the CDT vaccine. As kids, they get their first dose when they get disbudded (anywhere from a few days old to two weeks for slow developers), and the second three weeks later. It covers tetanus (which can be introduced into the goat through any wound) and clostridium perfringens types C and D, a killer of goats through enterotoxemia.

My kids also are getting passive immunity from nursing from their dam because the dams are up to date on their immunizations. IgA (a class of antibodies) are secreted in milk. With your goats, if they've never had a vaccine, the kids are not getting any passive immunity.

I'd recommend vaccinating everyone as if they've never had a vaccine. Give the first dose, then booster them all three weeks later. Then they only need the vaccine once annually.

So, your recommendation for me is to give all my goats the CDT vaccine and then a booster of this CDT vaccine 3 weeks later? If so, where can I purchase the CDT...as in is this something I can pick up at a location like Tractor Supply Company (TSC) or do I need to go through a vet for purchasing? This would be the same vaccine to give them annually?

Also, gotta look into a needle(s). Safe to assume a 21 or 22 gauge needle will be good? I would assume this is something I can purchase through TSC...??

My two Pygmy Goats are just over a year, which one of them gave birth to our latest addition born on April 1, 2014. Never had vaccinations.

We also added two Boer Goats a week ago and they are thriving! The boy had a grey color on one of his eyes that he couldn't see out of...the man we purchase them from told me it will go away as it was part of the birthing that happens at times. So far...it's just about gone, but why does this happen? He said the Boer Goats received their vaccinations already...and ignorant me didn't even know what to ask him at the time...as in what they received as vaccinations.

Any further help here is greatly appreciated!

You can find the CD/T vaccine at any livestock supply that sells vaccines for livestock.

If you haven't bought them yet, I usually use a 20guage needle for my goats, anything an inch or less in length will work for a subq injection which is how you administer CD/T.
