The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Oh the clean lines! Something so… calming there, visually. The artist in me likes balance

They are growing up so fast! Between them and the brahmas, you've got a bunch of wild teenagers on your hands!

Wendy the Wacko just hatched out 10/11 eggs the last two days. The 11th zipped but could not get out. Lots of little cuties in there. I spent some time with them this morning. No fear, I tell ya! That's a good hen there. I recall her last hatch was near 100% as well. She's a slight gal, nowhere near the fluff or coverage of the cochin, but can hatch out so many more because of it!

DH and the boys bought me an incubator for my B-day. They have no idea what is to come...

Uh oh. New bator jockey on the loose!

Hector is crowing. I caught him doing it. I heard what I thought was a "baby crow" a few days ago, but didn't see it. Today, I heard it and ran over there and he did it again. He has a pretty deep voice for an 8 week old chickster! My baby is a big boy now. Even Apollo, who is now 17 weeks old, doesn't crow!

Camera-shy Apollo and Zara are 17 weeks old now. His main issue seems to be too much thigh fluff. His barring is nice and straight. He's in that lanky, awkward teenage growth spurt, taller than wide. Still not crowing.

Yay!!! Hector is a fine looking little man chicken. I am in love!

Why do you suppose Apollo is not crowing yet? Is he more docile in nature than Hector? How old was Atlas when he started crowing?

I honestly don't recall when Atlas began crowing, would have to check this thread and see if I posted it. Knowing me, I probably did since the thread is dedicated to all thing Atlas.

Apollo is in with Atlas so he may understand that it's best to keep a low profile; or perhaps, he's just slower to mature, an individual difference. He is still very skittish, hates being handled, but he isn't aggressive. He will step onto my husband's arm from his little roost in the morning for a lift down so he has all the makings of a sweet, easygoing guy just like his dad, grandddad and great granddad.

All my Delaware males were usually crowing by 9-10 weeks of age. Once when I had a large group of them in one pen, they started just after 8 weeks old and were sitting on a branch in the pen, one after the other sounding off. I called them The Kazoo Band, LOL.

Well, the week is not out yet!! Maybe Apollo will get his crow on this week too. I was thinking that Apollo hasn't crowed in deference to Atlas as well. When we still had Boyd, (our blue Orp cockrel) he crowed early at 7 weeks but our other guy, Ray Ray, did not crow until he was almost 6 months old and it was barely a crow. It wasn't until we rehomed Boyd that Ray Ray found his crow and realized he was a rooster too. lol

Love the blast from the past Atlas pics!
