AAARRGGH...Canine Serial Killer! Help!

We are in Queensland, Australia and own rifles.  To clear things up, you need a licence for any type of rifle, including air rifle.  In order to get the licence you need to demonstrate you are the member of a gun club, or require it for work purposes, or live on a rural property over 40 acres where it is required for protection of livestock, or have permission from an owner of a property over 40 acres to shoot on their property for the purpose of animal control or to make a livelihood.  Or that it's a heritage piece that has been rendered inoperable.

You also need to pass criminal history checks and semi-automatic and automatic weapons are banned from civilian ownership.  So if the OP's relative's acreage is not a large one, it may difficult for them to keep a rifle.

Also, I second the pepper idea NOT working in the long term.  We've tried it to keep our own dogs digging up our reticulation systems and it didn't deter them at all.  I'd go with the electric fence if it were me.  We've done that and it has been quite effective.

I have a question... Do the criminals in your country follow those laws or do they have guns and use them to rob/assault other people. If we had those laws in th US that is exactly what would happen - the government, the violent criminals and just a few people who met the stipulations would have guns and EVERYBODY ELSE would be at the mercy of the ones that did have guns. It would be a bad situation.

Interesting, thanks for telling us about where you live.

Overall our rate of gun related crimes and gun related deaths are much lower than US. Physical assaults are more prevalent here than gun related crime, but yes there would be some level of illegal gun ownership as I think there would be in most countries with strict gun laws. My post was more to explain why, for the OP, obtaining a rifle to deal with predators is not at all easy to do legally. On top of that, the storage requirements are also quite strict, such as bolts, rifles and ammunition must all be separately stored and locked (we've actually had a surprise police inspection of our gun safe before). So actually accessing our rifles in a heat of the moment situation is not easily done. Going for preventative measures such as the heavy guage wire and electric fence are more realistic options for the OP than reactive measures, unless they want to involve their local council.

Very interesting, thanks. I agree, you can't always be there even if you have a gun and the electric is the best option and cheapest investment.
