Came home from work today to a hatching tray full of ducklings. Woodducks, American wigeon, American Goldeneye, Indian Spotbill, and Hooded Mergansers.

That's awesome! I cannot wait until one day I can have such exciting hatches. Now if only those hooded mergansers could make their way to NY...

Blue Creek, If Hooded Mergansers traveled better I would ship some to you, my past experience is they get to stressed and usually due within a couple weeks. Hatched a total of 27 so far and 26 are still alive. 15 of them are starting to feather already. I'm having an easier time with Hooded this year than Wood Ducks.

Are you referring to older birds? Because that might explain why my male died shortly after arriving... That is a lot of hooded mergansers! I have hardly raised forty ducklings so far. And the smew nest is not looking good. The fertile eggs are simply going black with dead ducklings in shell. Could that be from overheating? At least the hen spent most of the day off the nest yesterday.
