When my White Rock went broody, I grabbed some random eggs from my brothers flock. The only rooster he has is a Salmon Faverolle. His hens are RIR's, Buff Orps and ONE Salmon Faverolle. He tried to give me his faverolles eggs, but he can't be 100% sure they were hers.
21 days later, our first chick to hatch has feathered feet but only 4 toes. The second two to hatch have feathered feet and 5 toes!
Because I don't understand mixed breeds etc, I was wondering if someone could give some insight.
Would the feathered feet and 5 toes guarantee that those two chicks are pure faverolles? Or would those traits just be because of the Rooster?
Here are the little ones with Momma.

And one last question on gender. ( I can get much better pictures at another time) One of them has dark black wing feathers. The others are brownish. But, does the black wings mean Rooster?

Feathered legs and five toes are both dominant genes, so only one parent needs to have them to pass them on. I'd expect all his offspring to have both traits, no matter what hen he was bred to.

I think the best way to look for a pure chick is the beard/muffs. And you don't have any sex linkage going on with any of those crosses, so no way to tell gender at this point.

Congratulations on the successful hatch!

Thank you! That's exactly the info I was looking for in regards to the dominant genes. So if the two that have the 5 toes also have a beard/muff, then it's possible they are pure faverolles? They hatched on June 18th. Any idea when I'd see a prominent muff? I will have to get better pictures to post. And to be clear, I am only curious about the breed and purity of them. Of course I adore them regardless! :) They are endless fun to watch!!

Beard/muffs are a dominant trait, but incomplete so, you will be seeing a small beard and muffs on the mix chicks, and a regular beard/muffs on the pure ones.
Five toes generally should also appear in all offspring, to some degree, but sometimes, in a mix, other genetics repress the trait,

In the case of the first one to hatch. Here it is just a day old. In all the excitement of the hatch, I didn't notice the feathered feet until I uploaded the picture :) Then searched for it's 5th toe but this one only has 4. So interesting!!

Play with the Chicken Calculator.

Try crossing a Salmon colored bird over red and buff hens. There is sex linkage, but it's not an easy one to differentiate at hatch--cockerels will be gold, pullets will be white, with both crosses.

ETA: Plug-in Chicken Calculator with Tab-view and Tree-view (Many more genes added)
This calculator will even give you the option to put in the muff/beard and feathered shanks.
According to Tim's sex link thread, you can't use a salmon Faverolles rooster in a sex link cross, it's the wrong color. You can use a hen of that breed in a sex link cross.

IF and only if the five toed chicks are pure fav, then the black wings would indicate a roo but if there is a mix, it could just be a trait from the other donor bird or a mix of the two. I had two Fav x Legbar chicks, one had black wings, one had brown and yet they were both cockerels (now crowing!) and look almost identical despite their different start!

Incidentally, both had feathered legs and five toes and have smaller beards and muffs than mum but definitely there.

Thank you! That makes sense. It will be really hard to know so soon, I suppose. I will keep updating this thread as they get bigger. I'd love to hear your input along the way.
BTW- How old were yours when they started to crow?

This is the daddy. He's a beauty.
