Quote from another BYC member;
We have never grown barley for brewing purposes, but we did plant a field in it to graze lambs on during the winter of 2011.  That year was the worst one-year dry spell on record in Texas, and we had a total of just shy of 7 inches of rain on our place that whole year.  Our "normal" average annual rainfall is supposed to be around 19 or 20 inches.  Barley is widely known as the most drought resistant of all the cereal grains commercially grown in the U.S., but in Arizona I think I would be more worried about the heat than the dryness.  Winter grain crops usually have a tough time with hot weather.  Either way your project sounds like a fun learning experience.  Good luck!

I've been homebrewing since 97. City Farm likes my beer pics.
I brewed a Belgian ale with Piloncillo cane sugar and sweet cherries yesterday. It's bubbling away like crazy right now. Should be around 8.5% when it's done.

Nice! That sounds amazing! I love Belgian ales, though haven't yet forayed into brewing them yet. The hubby and I brewed up a blonde ale yesterday - nothing fancy, but our friends sure love it!

We've been homebrewing for four years, and switched from extract to whole grain about 2 years ago. I've hated throwing all that grain out, but this spring we got six Black Australorps. And boy, they love it! Of course, now all of our friends are joking about them laying beer flavored eggs.

I would love to hear the experinces brewing...   There are a bunch of Home brewing storefronts opening up locally.   I have been parusing them looking for different parts for Fermenting... Feed and Kiefer.

We do the FF.. The flock absoulutly loves it.. Tried Kefir grains. I might of spelt that wrong, auto correct.. We had so many we ended up sharing with about 7 different families.. I added it to cottage cheese.. I lve that none of the grains will go to waist..

Chickens love kefir! I add it to my FF to add pro-biotics, protein and calcium. They sometimes get the extra kefir grains, but most of the time I eat them or give them to my dogs.

Ha!! Funny
Those chickens seemed very afraid of something.

I think barley should grow fine here fall through the beginning of spring. I have no idea how to harvest it or brew with it.
