I have six hens and one roo, and I've seen all these other BYC members who talk about their farm animals and organic gardens etc, and I know about all the bad stuff about store brand food, but I don't have a choice not to buy them, as I live in the suburbs so I can't have much else besides chickens, and it gets me so frustrated! Can anyone else relate?

I can. I buy store bought meat a fair amount. I don't feed my birds organic feed. It's a matter of baby steps, and doing what you can where you are right now. Would I love to have enough acreage to raise all my own meat, hay, veggies, etc? You bet. I'm the type of person who would be happy not leaving the home place for weeks at a time

. But, right now, God has placed me on 1 acre, in an urban growth boundary, and not independently wealthy. So, I do what I can. Right now I can do a little more than you, cause I have more ground. I have the chickens, a decent size garden, and we just got 4 weaner pigs. Your neighbors would probably object to the pigs

So, now you've got your chickens. What else would you like to do, within your current space? Do you garden at all? if not, and you're at all interested, go for it. Start small and learn as you go, and remember you have the best fertilizer available. If you don't want to garden, you can learn to cook, or make soap, or knit, sharpen a knife well, study herbal remedies, learn first aid.....whatever strikes your fancy. Baby steps!

Yes, A lot of us can definitely relate to you Chickenking. It is true what donrae said "Baby Steps". Do what you can. I love our little farm, but it is never where you want it to be. Plus having to work outside the home takes up most of our time. Dang work. Gotta go there now. Have a good day!

Sure can! The grass is alway greener on the other side of the fence. However once you cross that fence you can see the weeds along with the grass. Life ain't perfect. Do what you can and keep going.
