Here are my four Barred Rock pullets, demonstrating why I don't have to buy a lot of layer crumbles for them. They've done wonders for the bug population, working under the trees to turn over all of the pine straw and leaves that hasn't been moved in years and eat all of the bugs they find. And toads, worms, millipedes, who knows what else. They pile up the straw and leaves till it's almost as tall as they are while they make their way to the dirt. They keep this up for hours.

After this, they had a lovely salad of clover from the lawn. Now I have to convince them to get to work in the veggie garden, there are plenty of beetles that need their attention! I guess ant nests are easier pickings. They hit an egg chamber yesterday, they were so excited. I'll just have to expand the flock in order to make sure all of the areas get the proper attention. :)

One of the girls just ran by the sun room with a big frog in her beak and her three sisters in hot pursuit. I wish I'd gotten video of that one. I'll have to set up next to the tomato plants so can catch them jumping up to try to nab the low hanging fruit (I grow my tomatoes hanging upside down).

And we can add mole to their list of proteins. Just saw one of the girls running past with her extra special treasure. These girls are serious hunters. That might be the reason we've noticed a drop in mole holes!
