I live in northern Indiana, and was looking at some of the breeds at MacMurrays. I'm thinking about starting with Either R.I. Reds , New Hampshire Reds , or Barred Rocks. These three seem to meet my desire for dual purpose birds, layers and meat. Any feed back is welcome.
 
I live in Mid Michigan - have had Barred Rocks, currently have two young ones, my hens were killed by a critter a year ago but prior to they were good layers. The Rocks are hardy birds.
 
Welcome to BYC. I am not familiar with any of those breeds but, if you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum - you can locate and post on your state thread. Very likely you will find chicken people near you. You may be able to find those breeds locally, so you would save them the ordeal of shipping, and could also see before buying and know what you are getting.

Those are great breeds!! Barred rocks are great layers and are very friendly. RIRs tend to be a little more aggressive but are extremely good layers. New hampshires also are more aggressive but are great layers.

You may also want to look into buff orpingtons and black australorps. They are great layers and dual purpose. And they are extremely affectionate and sweet.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I have had all of those breeds at one time or another over the past 50 years and between those three, I would go with the Barred Rocks. The RIRs will slightly outlay them, but are sometimes aggressive (especially the roosters). Barred Rocks are more docile than either RIRs or NHRs. Other dual purpose breeds which are calm and gentle that you might want to consider are Black Australorps (very calm and the best layers of the standard brown egg laying breeds; a BA holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days), Buff Orpingtons (very friendly and beautiful, and they will have more meat on them than the 3 breeds on your list), and Speckled Sussex (very friendly and beautiful dual-purpose birds). All of the breeds you mentioned will certainly be good egg layers, with a moderately sized carcass when they're laying days are over. Should serve your purposes nicely.

Other breeds I might suggest include Wyandottes, Orpingtons, and Australorps.

Just this year I raised a batch of Barred Rock chicks and I am very happy with them. Very friendly breed and they are now nearing 5 months old. They are will be laying soon as well. Very pleased with this breed. :)
