I have recently added a Giant Cochin Rooster to my flock...However, he acts like a hen and shows no signs of crowing or an interest in my hens who are 6 months old. He is very timid and the first day he hid in the corner with his head buried because the girls peck him on the head and have pulled small feathers out. Nothing too scary but still not something I want to continue. I was told he is 8 months old. His temperament is super sweet, but he seems to have low energy and moves like a sloth. Is this typical for the Cochin breed? The hens pick on him and have not accepted him into the flock. I am waiting for him to assert himself and be a Rooster. I'm worried that he is a she or he is simply not the confident rooster I had in mind when I decided to add to my little flock. Here he is...Please let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

Thank you! Does he look about 8 months to you? When do roosters start acting like roosters/crowing/mating? He is so quiet!

I haven't had Cochin's, so I can't say for sure but he looks a little younger to me. However Cochin's , being a giant breed, mature much slower than your average standard breed bird.
In any case, he will eventually establish his place at the top of the hierarchy but he's young and has no friends in an already established flock.
In other words, don't worry, he'll grow a "set" in a little while ;)

He's a rooster for sure, but he's young yet and Cochins are slow to mature. It can take them over a year to really hit their stride.

You definitely have a Black Cochin rooster and I would estimate his age at somewhere from 7 to 8 months. As some of the other members have said, Cochins are slow to mature.

Thank you! He is the most cuddly rooster ever! He just lays in my lap and hides behind me when he sees the hens coming. He knows I will protect him. lol
