Hi. Nice to join & have so much info on one site. Was gifted this 3 - 4 week old peachick. Anyone have any idea as to the species or gender? Thanks !



 
It looks like a blackshoulder peachick to me. I am not sure about the gender, but someone else might be able to tell you. It might be too young to tell...
 
Probably is too young but am thinking about DNA testing.. Black shoulder as in India Blue ? Thats a start . More than I knew a few mins ago.. Thanks!!

Glad you found us , post photos of your baby often and as it grows it will be easier to tell the gender, they change so much in just a few months, IMO DNA takes away the fun

Hi ! Thanks for your replies.. feeding 24% protein Dumor chick starter crumble. Little bit of electrolyte powder in water feeder . that sound ok ? Any help here is appreciated..

That should be fine, I'm a strict proponent of medicated feed for baby peas, especially if you have other birds so if you feed isn't medicated you might want to consider that option...

Yes, that would be my guess as well... As for a DNA text IMO no real reason, you will have a clue on the sex soon enough, and there is little doubt it's a India Blue, it's just a matter of what color mutation(s) it carries, and I don't even know if they text for mutations with the DNA test?
 
I was actually thinking about medicated but I only have 1 chick .. Should I still consider changing it ? So nervous abut doing the right thing. Actually even considering getting another for company, but I wanted to know what sex first ,
 
If you are not using medicated feed (and even if you are) get a bag of Amprolium (Corid) and have it handy, at the first even remote signs of coccidiosis start a treatment, they have little resistance to it and can turn on a dime... As for whether you should switch out now to a medicated feed, that is your call, there is no lack of drawn sides on medicated feed use... I use it religiously on small birds, especially my peas, others flat out refuse to use it...

I had losses to cocci last year even with medicated feed. This year I fed medicated fed and used the preventative dose of corid in the water and all chicks have been fine. I am a big proponent of Amprolium, in any form.

Your little one is much too young to sex, black shoulders are a little harder than barred wings. Probably have to be at least 12 weeks old before we can tell sex. Being alone it may start to cry for you when you leave it, a companion chick will be helpful in keeping it from being lonely.
 
Thank you all so much . Love receiving these replies. I'm not sure about getting a second pea unless I know the sex of the first . Wouldnt it be best I wait until I know ? If its a male, do I get another - or if its a female should I get a male ? Heard some dont get along ? Sorry for these silly questions, but I'm really not sure about next steps..
