Heat Lamps..., Clear or Red

I use red for the reason of that its not as bright as the White light for the chicks. Also incase of feather pecking red is better as it dosent show any redness up on the chicks as much.
 
Have you ever head that white will mess up egg production when grown? Im still learning, sorry if its a dumn question
 
I don't know about a white lamp messing up future egg production, but you'll drive your chickens crazy with a white light on all the time.

Their sleep cycle is regulated by light. They are awake when it's light and they sleep when it's dark. If you never let it very dark, they won't develop a normal sleep cycle.

This is why you use a red lamp, because it can stay on all night and keep them warm without keeping them awake.
 
I'd go with red myself
One, because its not bright as a clear, and also because it will help manage cannibalism when they start to feather out more.
Newly emerging blood-filled feather quills can attract pecking, and can resort in them requiring a taste for them.
Red lights help, because its hard to peck at something that's red, when everything else is red too.

Now if it's hot out during the day and you don't want to over heat your birds you would use a white bulb during the daytime. Will still warm them a bit without overheating.

It's just not good at night
 
Along the same vein, what about ceramic heat emitters? I've heard mixed reviews on them... Some say they are too warm, others say not enough... Some say they warm only one spot directly under where the emitter is pointed, others say they don't.

Has anyone had any experience or critique on the ceramic heaters? I'm hatching quail in two weeks (first hatch of any kind ever), and I'd love to be able to use whatever heat source I've got interchangeably!

For a small batch of 6 or 12 I like a smaller wattage brooder light. (125 watt white from Lowes $4) I also use a dimmer so that I can get the temp right. 95df for the first week dropping 5df each week. The dimmer also helps by not having to move the light around to get the temp right. Red is much better but I haven't found a low watt brooder bulb that was red yet. One of my recent hatches left tiny red spots where the cord came off and you would not believe how fast the rest came and pecked at the paper. Luckily they didn't see any red on him. If everything is lit red then nobody can see red. Chickens are like bad children if they see something different they all pick on that one.

I use a ful spectrum light during the day and then a red or black light at night. Ceramic is always a good choice for either, depending on the amount of natural light your chicks are getting. I like the full-spectrum for bone health...MPO...
