White Silkie chicken with irritated and bloody anus.

Sorry for your loss. If you can, look into having a necropsy done. This is how I send mine:

Hi :)

I just got on.

What is a "necropsy" and why is it important?

(I am unaware of a lot of things...sorry please take the time to explain this to me. In my culture people don't do a lot for their pets; if they die they die. I, however, want to be different. I want to be a person who takes care of their pets well. I know I have a long way to go, but I want to try and do my best).

I just had a family member bury her out in the yard...oops....

A necropsy is the animal version of an autopsy.

Poo is green runny and it smells really bad. She had runny poo since she was a chick. I can't believe that I just let this go on for so long. I am new to chickens and just thought she was not cleaning herself. I learned a big lesson...
Sorry for the late reply, I moved house in the last few days... It looks like Kathy gave you all the pertinent info anyway, but too late. Sorry to hear you lost her.

Please don't blame yourself; these things do happen. Everyone's made mistakes. Many people assume chickens always have diarrhea, I know one woman whose hens have been pooping liquid for all of their lives, but not died; she thinks it's normal. Easy to mistake disease for normal health, in fact what most people consider normal health is a mild state of chronic/long-term disease. Education, not condemnation, is the solution.

A necropsy would help prevent this happening again if it's something transmittable, most likely. Answers can help a lot.

Best wishes.

It's alright, even if buried they can be dug up and sent for a necropsy if still fresh enough.

It will generally involve things like checking if a virus caused this, or if cancer was present, or if there were structural abnormalities like possibly inherited ones, and other info like that. Knowing the answer can help you ensure this doesn't happen again.

Good on you for trying to be a positive change.
