Hi all,

I have a rooster now, and really new to this :) I am keeping him from a batch of crossed bred meat chicks.

Even at a younger age, he was different from the other chicks. I keep my layers and meat chick together, but they always sleep separated, each in their own part of the coop (I don't close the door, it is just automatic). But this rooster slept with my layers!!

So anyhow, I kept this little guy, he will be my flock protector now :D.

He is now 5 months old.

I just saw this thread to determine if an egg if fertile, so I will try that tonight:

But, is blood in the yolk any sign of mating, or unrelated? My layers have never had any blood in an egg until this week, and I find that it happens at the same time as I am seeing the rooster try to mate the ladies.

Totally unrelated, unless you have a pullet who is setting on eggs. Is it a red spot? Or is it a series of tiny veins or capillaries? The latter would indicate an egg that is under incubation, while the former is just a "meat spot". Nothing to worry about.

X 2 - to determine if your eggs are being fertilized you can crack a couple and examine the germinal disc on the yolk for the "bullseye" that indicates fertilization.
