Hi all,
I have a rooster now, and really new to this I am keeping him from a batch of crossed bred meat chicks.
Even at a younger age, he was different from the other chicks. I keep my layers and meat chick together, but they always sleep separated, each in their own part of the coop (I don't close the door, it is just automatic). But this rooster slept with my layers!!
So anyhow, I kept this little guy, he will be my flock protector now .
He is now 5 months old.
I just saw this thread to determine if an egg if fertile, so I will try that tonight:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/16008/how-to-tell-a-fertile-vs-infertile-egg-pictures
But, is blood in the yolk any sign of mating, or unrelated? My layers have never had any blood in an egg until this week, and I find that it happens at the same time as I am seeing the rooster try to mate the ladies.
