Is there is a proper way to clean eggs for consumption. First I did try the search and it came up blank (find this hard to believe? ). What I have been doing is just using a dish sponge dedicated for egg cleaning only. No soap just cold water and refrigerate after. Is this okay to continue it this way, I hope. I've seen some egg cleaner spray I believe. But not really keen on spending money on a small bottle of spray if not needed. Thanks for any tips or tricks of the trade in advance.

Hi Chad,

When I collect my eggs, I examine them and wash them only if needed. Otherwise, I wait until I am going to use them. You want the external water to be at least 20 degrees warmer than the egg so that any impurities are drawn away from the egg and not into it. Plain warm water is fine, along with your dish sponge as long as you are disinfecting your sponge regularly. Sponges are a great place for bacteria to grow, so I run mine through the dishwasher frequently to disinfect it. After the eggs are cleaned, I dry them and either use them or refrigerate them. If the eggs are not dirty, don't wash until right before using as the bloom on the eggshell keeps the eggs fresher for a much longer time than washing right away or if not necessary will allow. I do refrigerate ALL of my eggs though, so I mark my egg cartons as "Washed" and "Natural".
