I have 3 polish chickens, and one of them is acting very confused lately. She is a white splash, and has a HUGE poof on her head. Everyday when we open the coop to let them free range, she stays inside and just sits there. She also can't see me sneak up on her, maybe she can't see her surroundings because of the poof? Our chickens also go to bed by themselves, and recently, we find her just sitting outside. I'm afraid that with winter coming up, one day we won't be able to find her and she'll freeze.

What could be the problem… Does she just need a haircut, or is this common in polish chickens? None of my other polish do this.

Btw.. should I post this in the injury and stuff section? I wasn't sure where I would get the best luck.

If she is other wise healthy and ok I would say yes it's because of her crest and being unable to see. I have to trim one of my polish cockerels crest because he also has trouble seeing and becomes confused quite easily. He's the one in my avatar pic.
I don't do unsupervised free ranging with my polish it's too much of a risk of them getting lost due to poor vision. I also usually have one that lingers in the morning before coming out.
As for the not going to bed at night sometimes the odd one of mine dosnt always go on their own and I have to put them to bed. Although this is just occasionally and I always do a head count before locking up on an evening.
Hopefully with a trim she should start getting back to normal :frow
