Tonight we heard a heck of a fight going on out at the hen house. My wife and son and I went out to see what was going on. When we got out there most of the hens were up on the roost, and there was 4 hens laid about, bloody and battered on the floor. I knew it wasn't a raccoon, not enough blood.

As we searched all around the pen it looked clear, and couldn't see foot prints in the snow. The hens wouldn't quite down and became louder. Upon checking the hen house again, suddenly this little black thing scurried out of the straw and headed for the exit. It was a mink.

I have set "humane" traps baiting with caned tuna. We have to use humane traps because we have barn cats we would rather not see snagged.

Anyone else have trouble with minks in Ohio? This is the first one we have ever seen. Should I just continue to leave traps in place?

Thanks for any advice.

Quick and dirty: Buy several Big Victor Rat traps (if you're not used to setting them, wear gloves just in case). Bait with bloody liver/meat, use any old plastic storage container and cut openings (for mink to enter) on each side, along the lip of container. Place a set trap on ground, flip container over the trap and place a brick on top.

For a more permanent fix: You tube search for weasel/mink box traps (easy to cobble together).

With live trap, make sure to drip fresh blood on bait.

see this thread for modifying live trap: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/232969/modifications-for-standard-havaharts-save-time

Really need to hardware cloth every little gap in coop walls/around door/floor. We have the occasional weasel (never have caught one in a live trap), the Rat trap has taken one, however.

The hen house is sound and secure... the automatic door (by accident) was turned off... and didn't lower. Hard, hard lesson learned.

Sorry for the loss. It is good you heard them (baby monitor in coop is very handy, as well).

Hope you get that mink. Next to Red Fox, weasels & minks are about the worst. If you have a pond nearby, the mink might be somewhere in/around the edge of the pond.

Mink are to large for the rat trap to be effective. If the devil is squeezing through a hole you can set a 110 bodygripper over the hole. 110s are 4"x4" and I use them around cats without issue.

Suspect is apprehended. Will probably set trap and bait for a few more nights to see if we have any others lingering.

rockintheboat, sorry you had to go through that. I've been through a flock slaughter, and it sucks. I am glad you got the mink though. If it makes you feel any better, minks are generally solitary, and they don't have set territories (ie-they don't hang around in one place forever).

One of our hens was injured in the attack. She couldn't move last night, she was breathing with a minor (or major, not sure yet) head injury. We brought her in, we are keeping her warm. She even laid an egg this morning, but she isn't sitting. She appears to be drinking. She isn't holding her head up real good, but better than last night. He legs mover, but she isn't happy moving them. There are no visible broken bones to be felt.

Her eyes are clear and her wounds "seem" minor... we think she may have injured herself flying off the roost. We have seen some...small improvement since last night and will keep giving her in the "intensive care unit" until we have to make a decision or she improves.
