We're glad to have you.

I wouldn't say that it is neccesarily bad for chickens to go out in the winter. It is good for them to get some fresh air and have more space to move around. Mine seem to not mind going out, even when there is snow.

But yes, they can get frostbitten feet. This can especially be a problem if it is very wet snow or otherwise wet outside or very cold. Make sure that they have a dry, warm coop to go back to if they get cold.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Chickens can walk through snow for limited periods of time without getting frostbitten feet, but if they are going to be outside for a long, indefinite period of time then you definitely need to shovel the snow from the area where they will be outdoors. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

I agree with the above posters. I think it ok for a short time on shoveled paths, but they should stand out on snow continuously for long periods as yes they can get frost bite on their feet.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!
