Heritage Rare Black Javas $3 each--test hatching complete w/ good results!

I had 10 beautiful chicks to hatch and put them with my broody girl. One died early on for unknown reason but other nine were thriving till yesterday. I made the mistake of not realizing there were very small holes in the main run. I moved them to the main coop and everything was looking wonderful till 5 escaped into the dog fence and were killed. Mom and other 4 were moved to another coop with No escape possibilities. Anyway, I'm still very interested inthe Black Javas and would like another dozen eggs as soon as possibile.

I have 4 in the brooder, 2 staggering around the incubator, 1 resting and one pipped and resting. Out of 9 live eggs, 5 pipped the wrong end. One was able to hatch on it's own, the others have needed assistance. Thank goodness for the Assisted Hatch documentation.

I was reading a research paper this morning about malpositioning, and it said it could be from not enough angle change when turning, or even laying a more round egg horizontally. I think the second suggestion was a factor in my South-Enders. Hopefully all will be well with these babies! Waiting for the last assisted chick to leave it's shell and the pipper to make a big entry.

I had several ( a different breed, my javas are incubating at the moment with two weeks to go) pip the wrong end from shipping eggs, My eggs that were not shipped eggs a couple also pipped the wrong end. However, those were hand turned until almost day 14. I know a lot of people hand turn their eggs, maybe I did not do it often enough but I could see a difference between those and the ones in the turner.

My point here (just wanted to give a little history), I had read that you should not candle or handle the eggs day 11-14 because that is when the chick is positioning for the hatch. ? I assume that means not messing with them, just leave them turning without touching them, however not sure how that would work for the hand turned eggs. I sure wish I could find that thread again. I was going to try this incubation to no peaking or touching during this time and see if there is a difference. I may have candled to much. I would love to find that thread and elaborate on that topic better.

I had seen that about not candling day 11-14 on the Incubation Learning thread. But there was no elaboration. I sort of figured that rolling from side to side might be different from standing on end to candle. Just a guess, thinking about how a hen would do it. I had my own fresh eggs that I put in my incubator and it has a turner that rolls them back and forth and I didn't candle on days 11-14 and one still pipped the wrong end. It did hatch itself okay though.

Hey, I wanted to get you an update and have a couple questions answered as well... Out of the dozen hatching eggs we ordered 6 hatched and out of those 6 we had 1 die after 2 days because it refused to eat or drink. Well out of the remaining 5 we have a feather issue with 4--- they have some bald spots and no tail feathers. I mean there is no feathers growing at all in those areas----- and there are several bald spots on each chick... they are 2 months old now and should have all feathers...... is it possible these are mixed as we are afraid to put with our other Black Javas at this point..... what else could the issue be? As it stands only 1 hatching egg has produced a viable chick. Not a good ratio at all. I can send you pics Friday if you like- maybe that would help identify an issue i am not personally familiar with.
