help. dog attack...

I have two hens but I also foster dogs on the side but I keep my girls in a run. my youngest hen flew the coop and my foster dog attacked her but would not let go. I was able to save her but she's pretty beat up. She has about 5 punctures and I sewed up the two larger ones (quarter size) and used emt gel on the smaller ones. While inspecting her I noticed that she cannot move her leg. It's as if it were unattached . She's on infant ibuprofen for pain and I'm using cinnamon and oregano mix for a home remedy antibiotic.all of this happened yesterday afternoon and today while cleaning her wounds I found microscopic mites on her face. She very alert and her overall demeanor appears normal so I want to save her. She's eating and drinking normal and even produced an egg today. She's still here I just don't know if the mites and leg make it a lost cause and if then I'd want to end her pain sooner not later..

Dog attacks can be so terrible. I have been there, done that

. Keep the wounds cleaned out daily. I flushed my hens wounds with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. I also put triple antibiotic ointment on her wounds and kept her in an isolated cage so she had time to heal. My hen could hardly walk and ended up making a full recovery. There were time because of the bruising and healing process for a chicken that I thought she had gangrene.

The leg could have gotten bit and she is just trying to heal. I would definitely put her in a large dog crate and treat her accordingly. This gives her time to heal without the stress of the flock.

Make sure bugs do not get into the wounds. As far as the mites go, I treat mine (in the winter) with sevin dust. Dust every 7 days for 3 times. They all must be treated. If it is summer where you are, there are others that have posted success in using coconut oil. Just messier, but sevin kills honey bees.

A dog attach is a lot of stress and shock on chickens. The fact that yours has already laid an egg should attest to the fact of how strong she is. Good luck with her, keep us posted.

Okay thanks. What is sevin dust? Is it like DE? No bugs have gotten in it so far as I can see. And she really is strong. I have her in a cage inside away from everything so she can just sleep. I hope Gangrene doesn't happen.

Yes. Just make sure (if it's warm where you are) that flies don't get to it. Keep the wound flushed with peroxide & water mix. Looks like it is healing nicely
