dogs killed chickens

I could out shoot you any day of the week

and I don't use a .22 to ward off intruders. I could care less if they call the cops, I'm following the law in my state.
Don't get your hackles up - I'm pretty sure Blucoondawg wasn't challenging your shooting abilities, specifically. I think he was saying, if you're going to shoot it, shoot it dead. Again, "you" being a general term, not necessarily speaking only to you, JJ. That being said, you may be following the law in your state in shooting an intruding dog. That is entirely your right. But there are also animal cruelty laws that may override your right to shoot a dog killing your chickens. You shoot a dog and it gets away injured you may well be facing charges. I agree that body shot is easier to make than a head shot, and if necessary should be taken - as long as you are using sufficient power to kill the dog. Not everyone thinks about that. A lot of people don't have shotguns or anything larger than a .22. I think BCD was right in saying that you should not take a body shot at a large dog with a .22. Blu, please correct me if I have misinterpreted what you were saying. JJ - you don't need to prove anything to anyone here - we don't question your manhood or ability to shoot. Let's play nice, OK?

Aww shucks, this is just another piece of evidence that we need a sarcasm font.

My hackles never deployed, I just have a dry sense of humor. Thanks for the intervention though, let's play nice indeed.

My theory is dead predators don't live to tell tales. If I am shooting something, I am shooting to kill.

You're right - sorry. I wish I could read tone and inflection. Sarcasm would be so much easier to detect! (I use plenty of it myself as I also have a rather dry sense of humor

I totally agree with shooting to kill a predator. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks that way. Again, sorry for taking you wrong.

It's all good. I mean look at me, a guy without an avatar is looking for trouble.

Maybe I am cranky, I haven't had any eggs from my game fowl or Serama's in a few months and I'm getting antsy to see some broody hens

I'm so sorry about your chickens! I HATE animal owners like that. I can barely even walk my dogs in our neighborhood because people let their dogs out off leash. Last walk we had a bully breed running up and testing us (and our dogs) my little one was chomping at the bit! I hate dogs offleash and out of yards because then I have to try to control not only my animal but theirs!

Unfortunately my dog is the chicken killer! I just rehomed all my beloved silkies and my hamburg after he killed one of the silkie chicks! I'm hoping to get ducks and chickens again in the future once I figure out a good setup for them, one where they are safe and can still "free range" and by that I don't mean free free but in a safely fenced in area that is either large enough to not get picked down to dirt or moveable.

Unless you're planning to completely enclose the area you're talking about (roof and all) there's no real way to keep the chickens from occasionally getting out. They'll eventually get into an area that has your dog in it - because they're not smart enough to stay out.

The better solution is to train the dog to leave the chickens alone - it's not all that difficult to do. It just requires you to spend a bit of time working on it, and control the initial interactions.
