In winter we put a heater in the bucket and it's worked very well.  We had a couple of frustrating days when water that had overflowed slightly froze into icicles, from the nipple all the way to the ground,  but the water itself never froze and it took Ken about 3 minutes with a hot air gun to free everything up again.

Thanks. I saw the horizontal nipples on ebay. Is that where you got them? And do you use a 5 gallon bucket or smaller?
