Im trying out the experiment of hatching eggs.
The subjects are eggs from my own flock.
The lack of funds is the reason for home made bater. I had all the parts I need except a fan, 30wt bulb and a humidity thermometer.
Problem: I can keep temp at 100-108 fairly steady with a 60wt bulb, however I have to keep door propped open To do this i've tested it and it worked all night at that temperature. have a tray of water directly under bulb and it extends under where eggs will be.
I dont think with door open the moisture can stay and without a thermometer to measure it i will never know. so then the question arises if its the determining factor to failure or success.
okay now the rest of the story.. didnt realize I chose a box er boxes that would be too small to include a modified egg carton to use as a turner after adding my foam board. so I will have to open and turn each egg till the last few days. Again loosing heat and humidity.
Im more likely to have big time failure but I wont be loosing money at a huge rate. This morning I added a few eggs and sofar my problem has been the tape helping hold door open cant hold up to the heat and has fell open a few times.
I have no way to candle adequate enough to tell if its a viable egg to start with. Nor very helpful in determining if dud.
so here goes with a experiment that in all respects should end without success.

It sounds like you have a few problems, like the temperature ranging from 100-108 degrees and the humidity not staying in, but it should be good to see how this goes, last year I had a manual incubator and I had to open them and turn them everyday, the temperature and humidity went back to normal after about 5 - 10 minutes so that shouldn't be too much of a problem but this year I'm using an automatic ( which I've never used), so I'll see if I have a better hatch rate this time:) I have 5 duck eggs in at the minute and next Wednesday I'm going to be putting In 14 hen eggs :)

Lol I have a few problems.. the temp holds pretty good once I get it stable after opening, takes a lot of attention at first.. the water doesn't seem to be evaporating very much as I expected with the 60wt bulb so cant be sure any of it is going where needed. This is truly arctic in fashion but my goal is to see how meticulously and machine involved i have to get.. while I wait on a broody hen to develop.

I would try a smaller bulb. I have the below incubator going currently...

Holds a steady temp of 102 (best for still air), with a blanket and I have a 15w bulb.
I hatched out 15 so far this year in 2 separate hatches,

and my box is bigger than yours, but I have my eggs suspended higher in the box because heat rises.

What are u hatching and what have u hatched so far

Well breed wise for the year, My first batch was NN/Frizzle, and Frizzle Bantams...
,

Then this last group were from 2 diff farms,

These eggs hatched Sat. Med sized frizzles from a diff blood line. Gray egg layers, something I started,...

Then from the other farms I have Blue Andelusian/and or Isbars over Americauna

Lastly, 2nd farm SFH was the mom, not sure on the dad yet, may be another SFH I have to wait for the feathers.

Currently I have in incubator, Lavender Orpington egg, another Gray egg frizzle (like my avitar) more SFH from the one farm, and Isbar, and isbar/maran.

just got Backyard Poultry mag to do an article on my incubators April/may issue pg 19.

LOVE the grey egg! How cool is that lol.

Well the eggs in mine are level with lamp I had to put a barrier between light and eggs so heat would be a little more even. They dont seem to have a problem getting hot. Do you have a fan?
