We have a 3 day old chick that started with a small scab on her top eyelid but she was still able to open her eye a little bit. She was the smallest chick so she was getting trampled and pecked at, so we separated her with 1 other small chick who was getting pecked at. After the first night when we woke up we saw that her eye was more red and swollen and noticed that her nest mate was pecking at it, so we separated her completely from everyone. Last night she slept alone but this morning was even more red and swollen like a balloon. So either she was scratching at it, or since she is pretty clumsy with only one eye and she falls down a lot, she may have gotten food, dirt, or poop in it.

We hope she still has a functional eye under all that swelling, but for now we just want to focus on helping her. I rinsed it and put a dab of neosporin on it...but right when she went back in her brooder, she face planted into her food and it stuck to her eye. I re cleaned it and now I'm just holding her so she can't get anything else in it.

Has anyone had experience with this? does this look like an injury or infection? What is the best way to treat it? How can we keep her from agitating it more? Is there food other than starter crumbs that we can feed her at 3 days old, that wouldn't be so abrasive if she gets it in her eye?

Here's some close up photos of it. Her other side is completely fine.

I posted this in the wrong category, I should've posted it in Emergency/Injuries. Although, I can't figure out how to delete it here. sorry
