Solar Powered Night "Eyes" Predator Protectors

Hello, I'm new to BYC and chickens. Our (6) chicks are still inside the house but we are getting ready to move them outdoors in the next few weeks. We will be using a coop/run purchased from the farm store but I'm concerned about predators. We've beefed it up but with all the raccoon and fox we have round here, I'm still worried.

We have a shed that my husband will convert this summer and build an attached run. It will be much more secure. But in the mean time....

I was looking at those solar powered night lights that glow red and flash. Any experience? Mixed reviews on Amazon.

Welcome! I think that predators will adjust to anything that flashes just fine. Spend your money and time on building a predator proof coop that is bigger than you think you will need.

Chicken math happens! Usually the store bought coops are too small and flimsy; I'd work on your shed instead. Mary

I agree. Get the shed done ASAP, attach a sturdy run, and get the chicks out of the house so they can move around and enjoy being chickens. What kind of fencing does the store bought coop/run have? If it's chicken wire, replace that before you put the chicks in it. It'll never stand up to any determined predator. How big is the store bought coop? Does it have enough room for your flock as they get bigger? This happens very quickly, and they will run out of enough comfortable space before you know it.
 
The store-bought coop has 1/2" hardware cloth. It has 8.06 sq. ft of roosting area and 8.66 sq. ft. foraging area. 2 nest boxes with 4 nesting bays each. 3 roosting bars.

The chicks are only around 3 weeks old, too cold to outdoors yet. It was 19F last night with daytime highs in 30s. These temps/ are cooler than normal though, should be in the 50s by now.

I'm hoping this coop will hold them for a month or 2.

IMHO, these night lights highest use is to fund the manufacture's 401K retirement account. Save your money and invest in a coop or run update.
