I'm looking into getting Ameraucana chicks ( not Easter Eggers!) and all I can find is straight run D: I was wondering, is there anyone who has bought from Max Strawn who's willing to share there experience with chicks from him? :) I'm really hoping that he has a high hen to roo ratio! I've been trying to get chikens of my own for three years now so I'm a bit eager haha. I could wait till next year to order from Meyer since they offer hens... But I still don't like the idea Of buying from them that much at all, so if anyone could tell me anymore about his breeding and the odds of Roos vs hens from his flock that would be great! Or if anyone knows of anyone who's selling sexed purebred ameraucana chicks or hens that can sell to a gal in Indiana that would be amazing!

One should expect to have a 50/50 ratio in the "big picture" of hatching. However you could experience higher ratios of pullets or cockerels on any given smaller batch.

I have no experience with Mr Strawn, however unless there are sexing them for you any given ratio is possible.

Trying to keep you from disappointment.

Hope this helps.

I know it's a 50/50 chance, but after some reading i stumbled across that some hens produce more pullets or Roos.

Which is true it just depends on how dominate which gene is. I would say keep searching if you don't want roosters or buy adults.

It is more likely you will still get a 50:50 ratio because they have a whole lot of hens and rooster used for breeding stock.

Horschick, I have ordered Ameracanas from Max Strawn last year ...I ordered 14 chicks....I ended up wit 10 hens and 4 roos....But I was kinda upset as I thought they were all roos...It was hard for me to tell the roos from the hens....With these birds you just have to wait until they are a little older before you can tell....Max raises quality birds and I just ordered 18 more chicks from him...He is very nice to talk to and like I said his chicks, birds , are very good quality.....He will probably be the only breeder I will order from......Hope this has helped you...Sincerely....Dexterlady

Thanks for your reply! I appreciate it :)

We have purchased Americauna hens from Max Strawn in the past and they are truly high quality hens. He is great to work with and very responsive. We had previously purchased from others. We are getting ready to purchase more and are going straight to Max.

Hello hughesnva, I am really spoiled with buying from Max...He is such a nice man and like you & I both said, he has the best quality birds.....I know I will proably never order from anyone else....I just love Max....

So far at 7 weeks old it looks like I only have 4-5 rues out of 21 chicks! If this is indeed the hen-rue ratio I'll be quite happy :) and I will for sure order from Max again! The chicks arrived so happy, healthy, and friendly as well. I'm very satisfied with my order.
