A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

We are back to over 100 heat index. Blah. Daisy is still losing feathers by the handfuls. Shes in a snit. Cant touch her right now...yet she still wants to perch on my chair arm & stare at me like it's all my fault...

It IS your fault maman! You make everything else more better with your fans and pools... why cannot you make this itchy more better? Poor lady.

So one of my three broody hens hatched another poult and of course left it for dead..

I need to break their broodiness because 3/4 hens just stuck on a nest of probably rotten eggs is just getting ridiculous. Plus they’re getting thin and will probably just die if they don’t stop. If I remove the nest box they just go collect turds and rocks to brood over.

Has anyone done the hanging broody breaker cage with success? I’m about ready to build one...

I just use a dog crate with a brick under each corner so it's up off the ground. Works great for chickens haven't used it on a turkey yet though.

I don’t have any spare dog crates (have 3 dogs using them all!). I may make one out of wire though and then can use that later as my introduction cage for the new turkey hen. She only had one female bourbon red available (other available one went broody-missing/presumably dead). I put her in a chicken tractor where she can see/hear the other turkeys from across the yard but not have contact. Poor girl is crying out.

This is an advantage of not having pet friendly turkeys. If I want to break a broody turkey, I just take all the eggs out of her nest and she immediately abandons the nest.

I’ve taken the eggs so many times and the second a new one is laid they go aggressively broody and dog pile 2-3 in a nest box. Or they go gather up rocks and poop and brood that. Silly hens... I think they’re broken lol

So I just dumped over the nest box and let everything come tumbling out. The hens ran outside and so I locked them all out of the coop and removed everything egg like and the nest box itself. I threw all their crap covered non viable eggs to the pigs who gladly devoured them. One of the eggs was rotten and the pigs slurped it off the ground. That was a sight I could do without seeing again, lol.
