Originally I was going to do an 8x10 coop with nest boxes on the outside (attached, but so I can access them Without entering the coop)

this was for 15 (2 ducks and 13 chicks)
I just bought 8 more chicks
I'll have 6 total nantes

1)is an 8x10 coop still going to be enough?

The run was going to go down the length of my yard and be 8x whatever the length is

2)is it going to be okay having it where I want (see picture)

400

Will the chickens/ducks get to free range? If so, they could probably get by on 4 feet per bird. The standard is 4 feet per bird, so technically you could have 20 birds in your coop, but I like to have a bit more space.

they will
the run is more for if I'm not wanting to be right outside

But this summer I'm going to be out alot, between the garden I want and just making sure kids don't drown in the pool once it's set up

also, there is a lot of shade over there

Would like bird netting used for a garden suffice to keep over the top for now?

Quote: Bird netting would be fine. I let my chickens free range without supervision, but doing that depends on if you have a lot of predators. (Hawks/foxes/night time critters.) I don't have problems with that, but I know some people do. The chickens would probably enjoy having sun, but if shade is the only choice they'll be fine.

something to remember too though, chicken math kicks in, and you start to grow your flock. So you go to the general consensus of the 4 sq ft per bird. All well and good, and I'll never ever tell anyone not to use that formula.........BUT.........as your space gets bigger, all the chickens have more room available to them so the 4 sq ft rule might not HAVE to be used. Thing is, I've never read what the 'breaking point' is, LOL

I'm with you though, my coop is 6x10, which would be, by the formula, good for 15. I don't PLAN on having more than maybe 10 or 12. I have 14 right now. I know some of the straight run Blue Ameraucana's are going to be roosters though. I plan to keep one, any others will be rehomed. I won't replace them with more chickens. Although I may hatch out some eggs once they're all old enough to 'breed' some.
