I'm starting a new adventure with out Araucanas. We have a rooster and three hens. I put the hens in with him yesterday. All is well for now except they don't like to sit on their eggs. So I thought about giving the eggs to my broody Buff Orpington. I have heard that she will not know the difference from one egg to the next? She hasn't moved off of the eggs for almost two days. I'm new at this and wonder if this will work or would t be best to buy an incubator? Any suggestions and advice on raising some Arauconas will be most helpful. Thank you.

It will take a few days for your hens to start laying fertile eggs, if he is breeding them. You could certainly put them under your Orp and she will not mind that they are not her own eggs. You need to collect eggs until you have a full clutch, then put them all under her at the same time - an Orp should easily handle 12-14 eggs. Leave her sitting of a few eggs or golf balls until you have eggs enough to put under her.

I would suggest a visit to the Learning Center to find out more about hatching eggs.
