Hey guys, I have some 8.5ish week old cornish x rocks that are ultra ready to process and a guy interested in purchasing some from me. didnt intend on selling them, just stocking the freezer, so i didnt keep any records of feed costs etc, to work off of. :-( but my hubby and I recently separated and its taking this newb a very long time to get through the processing myself and also I could use the money more than I even can the meat right now, so I was wondering if you could tell me what the going rate is or how to go about foraging an estimate. or also how that differs if i have already processed them. thanks!

Well, i figure how much i paid for each chick, and that is my starting point. If i didn't keep track, i think about it and guess about how many bags of feed i bought, divide that by how many birds i have, and then that is the raw price. Then i figure how much my time is worth since i cared for them, and same if i'm processing. So, example, say i have 10 birds. I paid $3 a piece for them at the feed store, them as they grew say i bought 4 50lb bags of feed at $15 a bag. That would be $60 for feed and then divided by 10 would be $6 a bird for food. So, that brings me to $9. now pretend i think my time is worth $3 for raising and cleaning. now i sell the processed birds for $12. Also, if they were raised organically or free ranged they can sell for a higher price. I free range mine and i can raise them for $4 a bird, but then i can ask for more when selling them since they were raised free range. I know some people nearby who sell them for profit (like as a business) they ask $20 a bird (free ranged) and have lots of costumers. I usually only sell to friends, so i give them a very good deal :) Hope this helped a little :)

okay yeah that helps a bit. they are big fat birds, lol should weigh factor in? this batch is not free range, and are not being sold to a friend ;-) and will be sold live. if it were u, what would u say would be the fair range if it were you ;-)

well, since they are live it will be less work for you, more for them...i don't know, maybe 10 bucks? I would pay that for a bird i had to butcher.....just my opinion...you should probably get some others advice too. :) you could also look on your local craigslist (or not local if you can't find any) for butcher birds and see what others are selling them for...that might give you an idea what they are going for in your area. I usually see more than one person selling butcher birds. :)

I have a friend who is selling for $3 a pound, but most people agree she will not make a profit. They sell for $20 each, already processed at my farmers market, I used to think that is over priced. If you are selling live birds, $12 sounds reasonable. If you are processing, $15 would be good. Maybe start a little higher and let him talk you down?
