So my chickens are now 4 and 5 weeks old.. they are running all over the main coop.

At random intervals when one is running and happens to run into another one the both stop and kinda jump up and flap there wings at each other.

Are they literally playing chicken?

Determining pecking order?

pretty entertaining to watch... they never hurt each other but once in a while seems like there challenging each other

Yep, pecking order stuff, normal juvenile horseplay.

I've watched my chicks jump up on top of something (usually the feeder) and take stock, waiting for just the right moment so when they hop down they knock as many siblings over as possible.

They will often run headlong down the length of the box crashing through the rest. I guess if no one challenges their run they have "won" the game? Who can tell what goes on in the brain of a baby chicken!

So far none of mine have injured each other in these little games. It's definitely fun to watch the shenanigans unfold.

can anyone tell me if both male and female will do this.....i have 6 week old chicks and i am hoping they are not all roosters!!!

Yes, both genders will engage in this activity. At six weeks, if you take and post photos of your birds we can help you sort out genders.

yes i was thinking that...i see a little red in their combs....pics to follow...thank you all for your help!
