Out of 52 laying hens we have one that has pecked off most of her feathers. I mean badly, she almost looks like an oven ready chicken. I hate to look at her and would like to put her out of her misery but my husband says she lays a large white egg every day. If it makes any difference she is a light sussex but not pure breed. Has anyone any ideas what is wrong with her. Also they are all free range in approx. a verge of land.
I mean a vergee

she could already be sick with something you don't notice, but the rest of the flock does.. and that might be why they are singling her out.. i think you should definitely separate the bird right away until it can heal, it will not be left alone. Once they see a chicken pecking on another it doesn't take long for all the others to follow along and gang up on the chicken...
