This lump came out of my alpine goat’s right teat this morning. Does anybody know what it is? Does it mean my doe has mastitis? Or is it just a lump of dry milk? She is eating and drinking and foraging and her udder looks normal.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The blood in the lump makes me worry that it could potentially be mastitis. But it might not be, too. Is her udder feel warm (warmer than normal body temperature)? Does it feel different? Is it reddened? Any flaky or stringy milk? Any visible blood in the milk?

The best way to truly rule out mastitis would be a mastitis test. If you could get your hands on one, then you'd know for sure. But there is also a different way to test the milk without any fancy test kid. I've never tried it, but apparently it works, as long as it isn't milk that contains colostrum still.

Thanks!

It may or may not mean anything. Blood spots can be caused by a little blood vessel rupturing. If the doe is eating and drinking, the udder does not seem hot and she doesn't appear ill and the milk does not taste salty, chances are it si nothing to worry about. See how she is tomorrow.
