I'm new to backyard chickens. My wife and I have been wanting chickens for years. We finally jumped in and bought 4 hens.

I wanted to post a picture of our coop and them you all for such a great resource on this site. I feel like without this site I would be lost. I can't thank you enough!!!!

This is a plan I used from Downeaster Thunder farm.

Here's the link

4 hens, eh? Be afraid, be very afraid because one day, might not happen tomorrow or the next day or even next month but, eventually, chicken math "will" take over. No need to be ashamed once it does - it happens to the best of us.

My husband says "no more chickens" all the time - yet he is the one who is constantly showing me listings for chickens from the local FB groups, etc. He is also the one that is fond of saying, "It's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission" - who am I to question his wisdom???
You could always just get birds of the same breed/color and hope they spend enough time with some in and some out that she doesn't notice the new arrivals right off. I had a cat once that had been hanging around our place for a good while before DH noticed him because he happened to look A LOT like one of the cats we already had -- it wasn't until he happened to be outside one day at a time when they were both in the yard at the same time that the jig was up (in DH's defense, this cat was a very wary stray and at this point was staying at least 50 feet from humans at times we were outside - and DH was only home about one weekend a month)

Haha. Those chickens are her babies. She checks on them so much. I'm worried about the sex links. I read they have a lot of health issues. I'm thinking in a 4x8 coop I can only fit 8 chickens in thee comfortably

Pfffft, than all her protesting is nothing to worry about as she'll soon be the one looking at books and posters and picking out new/different breeds you "need" to have in the flock -- simplest way to avoid the issue of overcrowding is just build another coop (or two or three, lol). The one you just finished was your starter/practice run

Just think how much faster and easier that next one will be...........

I have noted that my Red Stars tend to be more prone to diseases and egg binding, and as they age they can have problems because of how many eggs they lay, but if given proper care they should thrive.

It's better to have less chickens than the max requirement, since they are happier and healthier this way.

(My mixed flock, including a number of Red Stars)

Good luck!
