welp are now 4 month old hen we've come to find out is not a hen she/he is a rooster!! we were given 3 day old chicks 4 months ago and this morning i went out to find my now rooster chocdoodoling out loud! I was so shocked but had a feeling all along that it look different from the other gal. And sure enough after looking up some youtube videos we have ourselves a rooster.

has anyone experienced this and what did you do about it?

thanks

I am currently going through this conundrum too. My transgendered roo will be 8 weeks old tomorrow, and I'm not 100% certain she's a he, but pretty sure. I will watch him over the next few weeks, but I can't have roosters in town, so I will rehome him if need be. I have 3 hens. I guess a 1 rooster to 3 hen ratio is not favorable for the girls, as they can be injured by an overly amorous rooster. I did consider a no-crow collar, but since I don't have enough hens, it is more than likely that I will have to rehome him. (I'm still holding out a little hope that it's just a very fast growing, male-ish looking hen). Good luck!

Well I'm 100% positive this hen is a rooster lol!!

I don't think our neighborhood allows roosters either and I'd hate to have to give it away and only have 1 chicken left. Less eggs for sure and we haven't even gotten that far yet.

I know. My daughter has become quite attached to Cupcake/Clyde. At least I have some time to look for a new home. Rehoming a rooster (if you don't want them to be eaten) isn't going to be easy. You can always search for another pullet to keep your hen company. I guess they are social animals and shouldn't be alone. Check the BYC boards and Craigslist. That's my plan too.

Thanks and yes my husband would most likely want to keep rooster for his own eatings down the road. I'm not going to partake in that but from his country thats what they do. I would def want to get another hen so that my gal Thelma has a real Louise to hang with! I guess my Louise will not be referred to as Louie.

LOL!

Hen will lay just as many eggs without a rooster, they just won't be fertile (hatching) eggs. She probably would be happier with a few sisters to gossip with or hang out at the mall.
