Stray chickens?

Most people have experienced a stray cat or dog showing up at some point in time but has anyone ever had stray chickens show up?
In the last two months we've had 3 new hens try to join our flock. All three have looked a little scrawny when they first show up and I wonder if maybe a neighbor has neglected theirs so they wandered off to find a better home?
I'm still new at raising chickens. I've got my own flock figured out for the most part...but not sure what to think about random hens showing up.

Stray chickens showing up would not mean that your neighbor was neglecting them.. THEY ARE NOT THAT SMART AND DO NOT HAVE IPADS WITH GPS TO TELL THEM THAT 1/2 MILE AWAY IS A MUCH NICER PLACE. Or that you are a NICE PERSON THAT WILL LUV THEM ...LOL LOL.. Most likely scenario is that they ran for their life from a predator and then were not able to find home... You are in Texas. so I am not sure if there are feral chickens there. I Hawaii, my son told me he saw a mess of feral wild chickens all over the island in non urban areas. There are also less predators there than in Texas.
My suggestion... keep the newcomers if they will stay at your locale.. If you hear of neighbors loosing their chickens, then offer to give them back... They wont accuse you of theft if you tell them how it came about.. I can always back you up on that. Tell them to PM the cavemanrich.

I've had it happen to me once. A roo showed up one time out of nowhere. He was beautiful but I already had too many and my other roos wouldn't have any of it, so it was off to the auction with him. Is your coop visible from the road or do you let your birds free range and/or do others know you keep chickens? It's also possible that someone is dumping them off. That's what I think happened to me, actually. I think someone saw the chickens running around and dumped that roo off on me. We live in a very small town and only two families (my neighbors and I) keep chickens and everyone knows it. Or as cavemanrich said, they could have gotten lost from a predator attack or simply wandered off and happened upon your place. But hey, as long as they're relatively healthy and disease free, you got three nice free girls! As cavemanrich also said, offer to give them back if you hear any complaints about missing chickens, of course! (Or at least let the person come look at your newbies to see if they're theirs or not.

I live in an area without a lot of poultry farms or people keeping birds and had a chicken just show up one day. She was very healthy looking and decided that she liked our yard and wanted to stay. She used to lay eggs in the basement window wells.

I could see a neglected chicken wandering off in search of food. If there's no fence and they're not being fed there's no reason they wouldn't wander off. I don't think that's how my chicken ended up at my house but maybe it happens to someone else.

IF you keep them you should at least quarantine them for a few weeks to see that they aren't bringing disease, etc. to your birds.

Thank you all for your input. We were able to get a better look at her this morning. It appears as if she may have had an encounter with a predictor of some sort but was able to get away. We will have to wait until tonight to quarantine her but our rooster is doing a good job at keeping her away from our flock. Being that she's the third one in two months I'm surprised no one has come to see if we have any extras. We do let ours free range and they're scattered all over the property during the day so anyone that drives by could easily see ours plus theirs...theirs would stick out like a sore thumb among ours. We only raise buff orpingtons and these strays don't look anything like ours.
