Hello and Welcome to our BYC "Building the Coop" page. We have so enjoyed the many wonderful BYC pages and pictures that we wanted to share ours too!
We are a Christian homeschooling family of three that started our chicken adventure, like many on BYC, as a school project and an addition to a...

The Taj-Ma-Coop
The plans started out as a 10x12 shed with a conventional roof. Then I found a link to a 10x12 chicken coop (https://ag.tennessee.edu/BESS/Extension/ExtPubs/Plans/6248.pdf ), but I didn't like the height, the roofline, and the side walls.
The Rough Design - I decided to mix it up...
These are pictures of my chicken coop in Spokane. I had never built anything like this before...so I think I did pretty good! I did all the work myself too!
This is the before photo. It was an old shelter/feed stall for a horse. I ripped out all the "insides" so I could start with a hollow...

THE NEW COOP
We started with 6 chickens and a 4x4 homemade coop, with a 6x8 run. Well we bought a few juvies and raised a few chickies and now we are busting out at the seams. We looked around to see what our options were; buy a prebuilt shed, build our own, heck we even looked at the arrow...
my new breeder cages
well, I have been around chickens since the day I came home from the hospital as a baby so you think I would know not to buy more chickens if you don't have the coops already built, but I did it, I got lavender orps, bcm (both from Paul Bradshaw at Greenfire Farms, great...

I am excited to be part of BYC...............as a newbie chicken farmer (as I write this I don't actually HAVE any chickens yet) this website has been an invaluable resource as my husband and I plan and build our chicken coop. After doing a lot...
Our Chicken Palace
After losing far too many chickens to coyotes (and quite possibly hawks), I opted to add an attached run to our existing coop thus forcing our chickens to live in a 6 x 10 coop with a 10 x 10 run attached. While I didn't lose any of my girls, they were clearly not happy with...

Here is the North side of the coop with the smaller caged run and the yard run. The yard run was put up after a summer of the chickens taring up the grass in the back yard.
This is the south side with the window I added to the storage shed. Notice the egg door I added.
Just 3 nest boxes but...

After moving to the county and wanting to start raising some of our own eggs and meat I decided we needed a coop. During the design and construction, the "coop" ended up looking closer to a miniature barn. This project has ended up taking more time and money then originally...
