I have some of these as well as the excelsior ones. I have one coop where the nest boxes just don't stay clean - just put one of these in. We'll see if they lay on it.

I finally thought of a tip~ When someone says "put the egg in a cutdown egg carton" they don't mean cutting the top of the carton shorter, they mean cutting holes in the egg cup part of the carton or else you will be limiting proper air circulation to the eggs".....
Trying an experiment with Easter chicks. They looked a little cold after having to return the brooder plate to my neighbor. So I used a Christmas light rope for warmth. It's a little warm to touch so I'm guessing 105*. They love it. Laying on it looking much more chipper. I'll bury it in dirt for next chicks but for now it seems to be working. They have lots of areas to get away from it if it gets too warm.
The rope light is weather tight so moisture will not harm it. I think it cost $10.00. The area it covers is 30" by 30".
EDITED TO SAY ITS WORKING AWESOME!!!!!!
I believe some of my chicks are going to be splash Orpington's. There are also Dark Cornish in there which I purchased about the same time Easter Hal chicks
This same rope light works really well as radiant heat for seedling bed. This is confirmed seedlings did really well. Built an insulated tray with kitty litter covering the rope light. Seed pots put on top. Radiant heat for seeds. Put cover over all to hold heat in. This idea is online if you want to google it.
