Any idea on genders of my 2 black ameraucana? They are 11 weeks old. No crowing from either of them yet. Theyre combs are pretty similar I find. Can be pink at times then paler at other times. Chicken number 2 has more of a green sheen to its feathers. Sorry if pics are not good enough, chickens are so hard to get pictures of.

That’s ok it’s just my luck that most of the chickens I hatched are roosters. I had chickens a couple years ago and ducks then gave them away, the ducks were so messy. Now this year I’ve had a lot of wasps around, so wanted some chickens to keep the wasps away from my goats and horse barn. Got 7 day old pullets from hatchery, and hatched 11 in my incubator. Pretty sure 10 out of 11 are roosters

Sheesh, that is awful luck. I guess rooster can do the job with wasps but they won't give you eggs.

They are both cockerels and not pure for color with the silver leakage.
How do you determine the difference between "pure" for color verses just poor breeding quality leakage?

Also at least one of them look blue more than black to me. I think I see pointy saddles starting.. but without red wattle/comb and some confident behavior to confirm, I wouldn't yet be confident in my assessment or jump to giving them away. Usually starting around 10-12 weeks, but much clearer by about 16..

Based on barring, the barred bird in the last pic is probably a cockerel. Extra roosters aren't a problem if you eat them.. I always hope for better pullet ratios though!

I saw other threads with folks complaining about bees on their feed, most chickens were avoiding them. I use permethrin based "horse fly" spray on the walls, etc of my goat barn.. to fight mosquitoes.. it's also likely effective against wasps.

Ducks were too messy and ate too much for me also. Hope you enjoy your new chicken adventure! :wee
