I put my first 18 eggs in our new incubator yesterday afternoon, not even knowing about the HatchAlong but am super excited to join. It is my first time attempting to hatch our own chicks.

Could I?!!!? But I already put my eggs in?!!!

We all have our own theories and studies on why and how to do things. You can wipe the poop off with a paper towel, or you can gently wash the egg in hot-ish water. Not scalding, about 110*F .

Thanks! I just want to give them their best chance and not accidentally kill them.

I didn't realize eggs for incubation could be washed. I thought I read they can't be washed or it'll take the film off the outside that helps them hatch. How did you wash them? I have two more eggs I'd like to put in the incubator today but somehow the girls pooped in the nest and got it on the eggs and I'd love to wash that off before putting them in the incubator.

Your eggs probably are not as dirty? I have no idea whether you want to risk incubating dirty eggs.

I’m a complete newbie with the incubator. Broody hens have raised all my chicks. I was faced with dried yolk all over most of my fertile eggs. Rats are to blame and I now realize I have to collect eggs when they are laid (at a ranch 5 miles from my residence). This will be an experiment to see whether I end up evacuating 22 stink bombs from my bedroom, lol.

I held each egg under running hot tap water and wiped with a paper towel, then wiped with another soaked in hydrogen peroxide.
