I have SCOURED the web looking for ways to identify male vs female polish chicks and I still can’t figure it out for the life of me. I used this website, http://www.swpoultry.com/CindySite/Sexing_Polish.html
And from the top, I would say my chick is female. But when I look at the male example, I lose all confidence. Can you really tell Polish chicks apart by the poof this young???

I got this chick today from my LFS, s/he was in the group labeled as Assorted Polish with the context “A mixture of all our Crested breeds, this assortment is based on availability and may include the Buff Laced Polish, Crevecoeur, Silver Laced Polish, Gold Laced Polish, Spitzhauben, White Crested Blue Polish and/or the White Crested Black Polish.” I’ll post the pic with the group it came with and it looks like the poof is different even on the ones that are the same colors.

Some of them look like they don’t even have a poof, and I assumed those were males, but I really don’t know :idunno never dealt with polish or straight run before so I’m hopeless here. Any input is appreciated 😬

Polish are notoriously hard to sex. They can be weeks & weeks before you know and some have kept me guessing for months! The shape of the crest has no bearing at all on what sex they are. I’ve hatched many a polish chick and I’m still no wiser until they are older. Cute chicks you have there @AngelaSh Please repost some pics in about 6 weeks :)

That’s what I was worried about. Hoping it’s a hen because we can’t have roosters here, but I’ll be back in a few weeks with an update :) thanks for your input!

Unfortunately the chick passed away the other day 😢 I’m not sure what happened, but I saw s/he was acting lethargic and getting stepped on by some of the other chicks. I tried feeding, giving more water, and keeping her warm but within a span of an hour, she was gone 😔 none of the other chicks look sick and they’re all acting fine, so I’m hoping it was a genetic issue or something beyond my control
