The egg ecology out here is:
Hens lay.
Roosters protect hens from dogs who want to "play".
Dogs keep each other company while protecting chickens from vermin at night (and sleep inside during the day).
Humans feed the dogs (Great American Cattle Dog and Blue Lacy) and locate at the end of a long dead-end country road where the dogs and chickens can run free.
I could avoid the sexism if I kept the chickens cooped up. I feel really bad about that but the testosterone-poisoned chickens called "roosters" are actually necessary to the whole scheme since I can't afford a coop.
