I called the place I ordered the scale from today. Turns out, my order never went through. My SIL drove over with a food scale in less than 10 minutes. Um... duh. Weighed the emerald Orb and got a weight of 458 grams which I'm thinking is not such a good thing as it is much less than the weights I've seen. :(

It could have just been a light egg to start with though, don't loose hope just yet. Put that scale to use and aim for that 1.8-2% per week.
If you're using a hydrometer don't depend on it, see what the eggs do first and increase or decrease the humidity from there. Just use the hydrometer to keep it consistent.

Hi guys,

I haven't checked in in a while. Polli sorry to here about your chick.

We are up to 14 chicks so far for the year, 2 or 3 every week.

I justy fired up the hatch cam for this weeks hatch. The ostrich will hopefully hatch

I also picked up a new incubator for next years hatch. Have any of you used a Hatchrite before?

At the current weight loss, I will be at 3% at the end of the week. I think this means I should add water, is that right? I'm not going to, until I find out its the right thing to do.

Details:
Weighing at the same time each day for 3 days in a row, starting day 1 at 458 losing 2 grams day 2 and day 3. If weight loss continues at that rate, 14 grams/ week.

I'm feeling quite hopeless.

what week are you on?

I've had eggs lose anywhere from 8 grams a week on up to 19 grams a week (different eggs) and still hatch out fine.. just depends on the weight of the egg when it was first put into the bator.. larger eggs tend to lose more weight.. eggs with porous shells will lose more as will eggs which are too close to the fan

if you have a caliper you can measure the egg and check page 113 of the emu farmers handbook.. they give directions on how to determine the initial weight of the egg by using it's measurements (a caliper is needed because you need the results in millimeters and when it's measured it's not including the curve of the egg.. just the actual linear length and breath)
here's the formula: W = CSS x L x B x B
W = freshly laid weight
L = linear measurement of length of egg
B = linear measurement of the breath of the egg
CSS =(coefficient for the bird species) for emus it's 0.00056

Egg 12 is very very rough feeling and I think it is not going to be good. I am using my Retipro 6000 to incubate the eggs.

I have 2 now that I am 99% sure are bad... neither one is losing weight worth a darn... not even a full % in a week... plus one was oozing on day 1 (has since stopped and has no foul odor).. the other one is starting to smell "off"...
so I may only have 2 good eggs in this batch.. and one of them is supposed to be a VERY old egg... I wonder if the lady who gave them to me got the old eggs mixed up with the new eggs....

G-2

the air cell should be cooler until the chick breaks through the internal membrane.. one of the tests for a live chick is to remove the egg from the incubator for a few minutes.. then feel the two ends.. the air cell end should be cool.. but the other end should remain warm

so hopefully you have some healthy live chicks in there!
