Avocado trees take a looong time to produce fruit...7 years from memory?
I need something that doesn't mind things a bit arid. I don't mind watering lots but it's still very low humidity out here.

They are awesome though - how else can you easily create your own fat or oil substitute at home?

You can modify 'arid' hugely through correct preparation. Don't want to sound like I'm lecturing, or anything, but have a look for swales, hugelkultur, and other methods which can be used to lazily get microclimates established around fruiting trees. I am a lazy gardener! That's why I love my chickens, partly, they do SO MUCH of the work for me.

Can chickens eat avocado? I think I remember not?
