Baby Chicks- week 2 do I need to cover the top?

We have 27 chicks we have had them 7 days now. We are noticing several of them trying to fly around the brooder. We are using one of the oval metal troughs that are 24" high. When is it time to cover the top of the brooder to make sure no one flies out?? I thought I would have more time but starting to wonder. Any thoughts?

You know I actually don’t know this since I keep a cover on my chicks from day one.

I would cover it after 2 weeks, to be safe. They could get on top of the feeders or waterers and then go up from there.

Covers are safety make better for all I use one of hardware cloth

Yeah i think tomorrow we are definitely going to have to make up something to put on top to cover them. I'm just nervous if they get out they won't be able to get back in.

Definitely now. I have mine in a 30 in high playpen and they can fly out at 3 weeks. Make a frame or something that lays flat on top so there's no chance of anyone getting out. Simple rectangular frame with hardware cloth on top should do it.
