Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

I don't know if my experience is typical. But, if it is, then yes.

My new chicks are home!

I guess I still haven't posted enough times on here to post actual pictures, so the link to my facebook album will have to suffice. Out of seven that made it to lockdown, six hatched. Plus there's an Easter Egger in there that I bought to replace two of our older ones that turned out to be roos.

I hope everyone starts getting eggs soon

I'm finally going to be able to split my flock up for breeding this fall. DH and I worked on the coop to finish dividing it. Tomorrow I can start sorting out the pure barnevelders from my project birds. It's been so hot here and most of my adult hens are in full moult. Some look down right naked and it looks like a pillow fight took place at the coop

I'm waiting for the majority of my flock to start laying again. Some pullets are laying, but they are the only ones out of the entire flock. We're still getting triple digit heat

I think once the weather cools off I'll start getting enough eggs to do some fall shipping.

For the blue project, I have a nice blue cockerel, four blue pullets (one may be culled if she doesn't meet my goals) and the best F1 blue hen. The blue cockerel is a very stout boy and so far has a good personality for roo. I haven't seen him successfully mount a hen, but I think he's afraid of my main barnie roo. I'll get some pictures up when I can:)

Just dropping in to say hi. I'm the proud new owner of six new Barnevelder eggs, set today, as part of my first incubation (they've got six Australorp eggs in there to keep them company). We're hoping they'll join our existing little backyard flock of five (one has just started laying last week, and we're hoping the rest will follow soon).

I'm crossing my fingers that I've set things up right with the bator, and hoping for the best.

I love barnies and was going to get into breeding them, but I decided to go with white faced black Spanish and focus on those instead of breeding 5 or 6 different kinds of birds (let's start with just one kind LOL). So now I have 2 barnie pairs that I have to rehome that are getting very close to mating age (they are about 4-1/2 or 5 months old). Part of me wants to keep the girls because this is one of the few breeds which (in my opinion) the hens are prettier than the roosters. I've just had such a hard time selling roosters.... nobody wants them these days, not even to cook/eat.

Thanks for the best wishes! I'm struggling a bit with a thermometer I think is inaccurate (reading low) - and that would be fine in itself, but I'm worried it could be imprecise as well. Can anyone suggest really accurate, reliable (yet affordable) thermometers? It's for an octagonal clear-top Janoel incubator.
