beautiful black chicken - thoughts?

i picked up this chicken today at a local shelter. she or he was there with two roosters. of the three of them she/he was the "underbird" (the one i thought was least likely to be adopted).
can ya'll offer some ideas as to breed, sex etc.?
he or she is middle-sized and surprisingly heavy!

He, auracuana is breed guess. Not sure if he is anywhere close to the standard though if he is not a mix.

You got yourself a nice tufted rumpless black araucana rooster. I think I see some red in the hackle, but not sure if its the pic or lighting. If so, that is typical on blacks. He looks to be standard size since he has red ear lobes and you said his weight is good. The APA standard calls for 5 lbs on these roosters if you want to weigh him. His comb is really poor, but bred to the right hen would make some nice babies. Based on his spur development, I'd say under or just about a year old. Good find!
